Autumn Walks to the River

When the sun is shining on an Autumn day, there is a feeling in my being of great joy.  We've had lots of rain and cloudy weather this year.  I'm still hoping for lots of sun into the change of the season.

Quite happy jack-o-lanterns getting ready for Halloween.
                                            Kicking leaves--a favorite autumn activity.

A dancer filled with joy? A bird on the wing?  What do you see?

Headphones to hear a story as I check out all the beauty around the Mississippi River.

Autumn in Southeast Minnesota

The colors on the deciduous trees are changing in Southeastern Minnesota.  Lots of rain has forced the leaves to the ground very quickly.  It's not been the dry clear sky autumn of times past.  But we're enjoying the days as we can.

The monarch butterflies love the New England Aster in my yard.

The Mississippi River a few blocks from my house.  I walk to see it as often as I can.

A bald eagle outside my window from my Art classroom at Ridgeway Community School stops by on the day that my 4th and 5th grade students are creating eagles.

Welcome to the neighborhood, national bird.

How's the view from your neighborhood?

WInter's Coming

Cleaning the wood stove chimney is an annual autumn event.  This year it happened on November 18th when the sun was shining and it felt unusually warm outside.  I'd been out looking at art on the Art Walk around Winona and when I got back, Bob suggested that we get the chimney cleaned.  I go with his suggestion on this one due to him climbing up to do the work and I hold the ladder.

He is quite good-natured about this task and we are both feeling very glad when it is complete and we'll have safe fires in the winter time.

On December 6th, we had our first fire. Nice a toasty.

River Walk in all Kinds of Weather

I've been walking to the river often to see the changes in the river landscape.  And I realized that I could do it in the winter too.

Autumn Light

The leaves are just turning in our beautiful Winona area.  I was on campus at Winona State University  last evening and the light shining on half of the Performing Arts Center was quite amazing.

This Poem Belongs To You

This poem
    belongs to you
        and is already finished,

it was begun years ago
         and I put it away

knowing it would come
     into the world
       in its own time.

In fact
you have already read it,
and closing the pages of the book,

you are now abandoning the projects
of the day and putting on
    your shoes and coat
         to take a walk.

It has been long years
   since you felt like this.

You have remembered
  what I remembered
when I first began to write.
